Greg Day, IESNA, LC
Determined to study architectural engineering, Greg enrolled at the University of Kansas where he completed the rigorous Architecture/Architectural Engineering program, a six year dual degree. Between his fourth, fifth and sixth years at Kansas, Greg interned with renowned architectural lighting designer Gary Gordon, completed a six week intensive at the Shelter Institute and also gained professional experience at a small Connecticut based architecture firm.
While at college, Greg also delved into oil painting. Later he furthered his craft in New York City with the assistance of a Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation Grant. He doesn’t mind being called an “artist” but considers himself a “builder of paintings". Greg creates abstract urban visions in acrylic earth tones, rich reds and deep blues, within the structure of a geometric black and white framework. His paintings have been shown in galleries in Portland, Boston, England and the Czech Republic.
Also, Greg drew the illustrations for, Interior Lighting for Designers, the seminal textbook authored by his mentor Gary Gordon. Greg’s 20 year association with Mr. Gordon began as an IALD intern and has continued through collaborations on a variety of professional lighting design projects, including high-end residences, restaurants, galleries, corporate offices and lobbies, outdoor spaces, as well as museums.
Greg’s professional work has brought him to England, Prague, to New York City for over seven years and back to Maine. In Portland Greg joined the Stephen Blatt Architects (SBA) team and brought his expertise to residential architecture projects. It was at SBA that Greg and David met and began their professional and personal friendship.
Since leaving SBA Greg has enjoyed a successful solo practice and has continued to partner wit Gary Gordon on numerous lighting projects.
The DayMatero studio unites two friends whose complimentary professional expertise and experiences allow them to design and implement architecture and lighting design suited to each clients demands, desires and budget.
