A quiet retreat was the request from a west coast couple planning their summer home on a small pond near Sebago Lake. During many iterations working through the constraints of a very small site, neighboring cottages, and planning board restrictions, a house emerged that feels like it has always been there.
A central theme was light. Purposeful, the eaves shade direct sun but still allow high light to enter the cottage; combined with the light bouncing off the pond to the west and strategically placed windows towards the neighbor, it is a serene experience throughout the day. During the evening, articial lighting takes over to create unique shadows with minimal and thoughtful fixtures.
A cedar trellis spine connects the guest quarters to the main house and is the transition from exterior to interior. The roof forms compliment each other and reinforce the simple, yet elegant, architecture.
